Chef Oscar Ortega was born in Mexico City where his culinary inspiration began. At a young age, he took the chance to move to Europe and it was there that he realized his passion & skills for the culinary and pastry arts, after a few years of working in the culinary industry, he decided to begin his studies in pastry arts at Cast Alimenti School in Italy. Ortega furthered his education by attending various courses in pastry, chocolate, and sugar work around the world. His abilities and passion for pastries grew, expanding and working years throughout the UK, Italy, France, and in USA where he settled down to call it home.
In 2004 Ortega opened his first pastry shop, Cioccolato in Jackson Hole, Wyoming USA. This is where he created his first exclusive line of Artisan Chocolates and Fine Confections. Shortly thereafter, he took the opportunity and form a National Pasty Team, a group of highly skilled, talented, and passionate chefs that compete around the world to support and pursue of culinary perfection. In 2009 his shop expanded and was renamed Atelier Ortega (AO). Today AO is a thriving business with two locations and an online store, that produces an extensive variety of Artisan Chocolates, Gelato, Desserts, Entremets, Confections, and Viennoiserie, serving its global customer base.
In 2009 Chef Ortega became the first Mexican Chocolate Master and represented Mexico at the World Chocolate Masters Finals. He has also been awarded in many other national and international pastry competitions. He competed at the USA World Pastry Team Championship from 2006 to 2012. Also, at Le Mondial des Arts du Sucre, Paris from 2008, to 2018. He was also the captain of team Mexico at the Coupe du Monde de la Patisserie 2007 and participated and was awarded at the Campeonato Latino Americano del Helado Artesanal in Argentina 2015, 201,7 and at the Gelato World Cup in Rimini Italy 2012, 2014, 2016.
Ortega’s work has been featured in national and international Television specials (PBS, TLC, Discovery Channel, Food Network, Travel Channel) as well as being featured in important pastry and food national and international magazines, in 2011 Chef Ortega was named one of the top 10 pastry Chefs in America, taking home the silver bowl and the highest recognition on that year.
In 2016 Chef Ortega opened his 2nd shop, a new dessert concept in downtown Jackson Hole WY; CocoLove, his retail boutique that carries an exclusive line of Artisan Chocolates, Desserts, Entremets, Gelato, Confections & a variety of artisan breads.
Additionally, Chef Ortega works as a pastry consultant and is the CEO of his 2 other companies, “Frozen Sweet Solutions, a distribution company of imported ingredients for the confectionary industry, and “RuVa Coffee” a High-end specialty coffee producer and roaster of Costa Rican coffee beans.
Ortega's most recent achievement, he is a Nominee for the prestigious James Beard Awards in the category of Outstanding Bakery Chef of 2025.
